Perast, a quaint seaside town with a population of just 350 inhabitants, boasts a compact size spanning less than a kilometer. Perast History

Tracing its roots back to the ancient Illyrian tribe Pirusta, Perast evolved from a humble fishing village with active shipyards as early as the 14th century. Following Kotor’s allegiance to Venetian rule in 1420, Perast flourished as a prominent commercial hub within the Boka Bay region, which was divided between the Ottoman Empire and the Venetian Republic from the late 15th century onwards.

Following a resilient defense against an Ottoman assault in 1654, Perast was bestowed with the Venetian flag of St. Mark, marking a period of prosperity for the town. Enjoying privileged trade relations with the Republic of Venice, Perast thrived until Napoleon’s conquest in 1797 brought an end to this era. Subsequently controlled by various European powers, Perast eventually became part of Yugoslavia in 1944 before attaining independence as part of Montenegro in 2006.
